What a "holiday"

(Crossposting this from Dreamwidth as a test. Username is the same.)

Just posting to say that the Clinical Logic people in my uni are idiots. If you want us to make the assignment on your site and hand it in, you should send us messages so we know it's there.

Anyway, busy few days. A run down:
  • April 31 was Queen's day which turned out to be a disaster (Warning, don't watch if you don't want to see people, well, dying). Basically, some man wanted to hit the bus with the royal family (he didn't) and hit a few people watching the parade. Nobody really knows why he did it because he died. A mystery. Almost all the planned parties have been cancelled except the one in Amsterdam because it would've been impossible. In the meanwhile, lots of mourning and panicking has been going on for the seven people who died. I don't think that's going to stop soon.

  • And May 1 was Labour Day so my parents went to Amsterdam for the annual party/protest/thingy. Workers of the world unite!

  • Oh, and today it's May 4, which is the day of Remembrance of the Dead on which Dutch people remember all the Dutch victims of the second World War (and of wars and peacekeeping missions after). Around 8 'o clock everyone is silent for 2 minutes. It's supposed to be a free day, but apparently uni students don't count. :|

  • And tomorrow it's May 5, which is Liberation Day on which we celebrate the fact that we're, well, free (liberation of Nazi Germany). National holiday. Huge festivals throughout the country. Did I mention that I have to stay in uni until half past seven? Why yes, I am bitter. >:(

  • P.S. LOL, Berlusconi. This is what you get when you play sugardaddy and let some 18 year old model call you "papi".

    Big ass random post

    1. I've asked so many of you for the answers to this meme, I feel like I should do it too.

    Comment, and I'll:
    1. Tell you why I friended you.
    2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
    3. Tell you something I like about you.
    4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
    5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
    6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
    7. In return, you must can post this in your LJ.

    2. I've been to quite a lot of cinema movies in the last couple of weeks. I saw Slumdog Millionaire, Che: The Argentine and Che: Guerrilla.

In which I review. Sort of. )

    3. If you think I use the word LOL too many times... it's also because lol is an actual Dutch word. It means fun. Yeah.

    4. Somebody ([livejournal.com profile] michaela0823) made this really awesome icon about Arthurian legend and [livejournal.com profile] misstopia mentioned how the Greek mythology loop would be much longer. I though: "Dude, I have to make one!" It only has the Greek gods, though. If you know what lines I could use for the Greek heroes, please help! (I'm thinking of Achilles, Odysseus, Ajax, Paris, Hector, Patroclus, Theseus, Perseus, Aeneas and others)
    the Arthur one:||And mine:

    5. I also made some snarky Shakespeare icons. I kinda want to use them but I think they're too snarky for me. But I can show them!

    here are four others )

    6. Thanks to TVTropes I read the SF short story I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. It won a Hugo award in 1968 and was written by Harlan Ellison (Also known for his groping incidents). Like the TVTropes page says, it's pure concentrated Nightmare Fuel (There's a link to the story on the TVTropes page. I want to share the pain). Even the title is creepy. D:

    7. I never actually saw any programs by the Dutch Public Jewish Network, until today. It was just a kosher cooking show but I watched all of it because Jewish music is swanky and cool (it was background music, but still). And my mum watched it because she likes food.
Mother: "This reminds me, I should use more chickpeas."
    Me: "Hell no!"
Mother: "You can't be Middle Eastern and not like chickpeas! It's just not done, girl."

    Two Memes

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] liaku and [livejournal.com profile] ender839! :D

[livejournal.com profile] beatonna drew the Plantagenets! (from The Lion in Winter) Hee, I love her interpretation, especially Becket's expression and Eleanor's glare.

Meme one, unwillingly tagged by [livejournal.com profile] thedls_sword.
    1) Comment to this and I will give you 3 fictional characters.
    2) Post this meme with your answers.
    3) Provide pictures and the names of 3 people.
    4) Label which you would marry, shag, and throw off a cliff.

Meme two, tagged by [livejournal.com profile] hamsterwoman
    1. Reply to this post, saying "pick me" or similar, and I will pick five of your icons.
    2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
    3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
    4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Back when I had to choose icons for my LJ I was in a real viola-mood. In case you didn't know, the viola is the most beautiful instrument evar and I play it (obviously). I just like the icon, it's very snappy and rather indicative of the attitude violists have ("Don't ignooore us!"). And I like the fact that the C clef is in the icon as well.

    The other four icons )

Also, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] badalice on the westerosorting chat, I have now discovered fmylife.com. I've been laughing ever since. Oh the Schadenfreude.

IT'S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS!

Oy, months too late, but look at this cool Stark children fanart by [livejournal.com profile] glockgal. Look at them, they are all so adorable! (The same post also has a drawing of Tyrion and a really funny cartoon version of Merlin. It truly fits the cracky and cute tone of the show.)

And here's another asoiaf fanart site that I just had to show for the hilarity factor (found thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sansaxsandor). I mean, what to say? The guy has talent, but what's with the torn doll at Sansa's feet? Or the one drawing where Sansa wears practically nothing and is holding a severed head (Littlefinger's head, probably.) with Lady's skeleton floating next to her. And then there are the Jon Snow drawings. I was boggling at the overdone armour Jon and Ghost are wearing until I noticed the title: "A Dream of Spring: Jon Snow - The Others King". After that I just LOLed. Also, the 30-year-old Jon strikes again. Just look at how buff he is! XD (ETA: [livejournal.com profile] pojypojy is probably on to something, it could be a World of Warcraft parody/tribute.)

And now something about doctors. I've only been in med school for less than a year, yet it's obvious to me what an impact the tv show House MD made on doctors. My ethics teacher showed snippets to show what moral dilemmas doctors can face. This I can deal with. What I can't deal with are doctors who are emulating House. No seriously, House is a douche. Don't treat your patients like a douche would (or talk about them like that). Last week we had a small work lecture and the hepatologist was making snappy and sarcastic remarks whenever a student answered a question. This already set off my alarm bells and then he suddenly said: "Everyone lies!" And mentioned House twice. And started talking about how all gallstone patients had the FFF (Female, Forty and Fat) and how they tended to blubber and wobble. We all laughed because he did bring it in a funny way but you could tell that a lot of people (including me) felt a bit uncomfortable. :|

Also, props to South Park for making Kanye West realise he has a huge ego. God I love this dude: "I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I'M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I'M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE."
Anyway, this is just an excuse to post the old fandom_wank entry where Kanye shows his batshit. AT THAT POINT WE'RE RACING AGAINST THE SUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hell yeah!

Okay, so [livejournal.com profile] guad and her easter egg contest on [livejournal.com profile] westerosorting have driven me mad. Finding the eggs? 15 minutes. Solving them? Done, in a pretty short time. EXCEPT for one teeny tiny scrambled word. Ah well, guess I'm not the asoiaf nerd I though myself to be.

    Anyway

YES, YES, MFing YES! Guess who got her three day apprenticeship with an eye medic on time? ME, HELL YEAH! I can also have a look in the surgeon room when he's operating. I actually believe my mother is more relieved about me succeeding than I am. XD

Anyway, those asoiaf quizzes. Well, I've done them both (and one was definitely better spelled than the other) and the results?

    Tully and Tyrell )

    Meme: Elemental Beauty )

Also, have been watching Kings, because I was curious to see what they would do with story of Saul and David (+ Jonathan).
Kings is a television drama series airing on NBC and Citytv, based on the Biblical story of King David in a kingdom that culturally and technologically resembles the present-day United States.

How is lightning like a violist's fingers? Neither one strikes in the same place twice.

Decided to try this out as well.

    the meme

My violin teacher broke her right wrist! This is pretty much horrible. I feel really sorry for her, but also sorry for myself. I don't know what to think of the replacement violin teacher. She's so different. She keeps asking me questions and ends all her sentences with an inquisitive look and "Well?" These kind of people unnerve me, but I suppose change is necessary every once in a while.

Anyway, my little conversation with [livejournal.com profile] chisakami about the viola and viola jokes (Warning: like all musician jokes these are incredibly lame, though hilarious) led to me checking out Wikipedia to see what they've written about violas and how we're the buttmonkeys of every orchestra (We're like the Night's Watch, ignored, undermanned and very necessary :P) and I was dismayed to find out that they removed the viola jokes part! Only one measly mention on the Jokes page. Reading the Wiki Viola discussion page was a blast, though:

I have a psychology book somewhere (a quite serious one) that has something like half a chapter on the viola joke (mainly musing on why the viola and not some other useless instrument like the flute). And I see even Google is getting in on the act of slating violists now: if you search for "virtuoso violist" it mocks "Did you mean:virtuoso violinist"... --Camembert

I wonder if this is funny for people who are not musicians. I hope so )

Pro-violist POV edits. Seriously, violists? Never change. (I don't get the part about the neutrality though. It's simply a fact of life that musicians will make fun of the violas. Even the no-good second violins XD)

Tomorrow EHBO exam. After this I am qualified to save people's lives. Hell yeah! >:D
(ETA: Sorry there, EHBO is Dutch for First Aid)

It's a beautiful day, the suuuun is shining

    1. Happy new year! Eide Nowrouz Mobarak! (Tis the first day of spring, the start of the new year for Persians and Iranians all over the world) It was a great first day of spring, with lovely weather and daffodils and hyacinths in bloom and sunshine. Except I also had my exam today, but I think I did okay, so I suppose it could be worse. My mother also made Saabsi Pollo. I really love Iranian food. But Eide Nowrouz also means that a million family members I don’t know call to talk to us. My Farsi sucks. The result: highly embarrassing conversations until my mother bails me out.

    2. For all you offended Avatar fans, check this out! It’s a picture essay about the history of yellow facing (and black facing) and pretty eye opening (At least it is for me). I really didn’t know about how widespread yellow facing was and still is.

    3. Another Avatar link (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets, lol) but of a different kind. Some girl made an Avatar webcomic and haha, it’s so offensive it’s hilarious. Some of the offences: Katara bloodbends Mai until she dies because she poisoned Katara’s son (Zuko is the dad). Azula has been forced into the role of a Purity Sue and she’s in love with Sokka ("How can anyone forgive me if I can't even forgive myself *gasp*") Aang still has his baby face, but the body of a bodybuilder on steroids (and he’s in love with Toph). And check out Katara's Disney Princess dress. Seriously, this comic is everything Avatar isn't (luckily) but it makes me laugh so damn hard.

    4. My uncle (from Vancouver) visited us after his trip to Iran (to be at my other uncle’s funeral) and he came back with presents! My aunt (I haz a big family) gave me a diamond necklace because I got into uni. My uncle totally fixed my laptop. My other aunt, who visited us last autumn, was so impressed with violin play (LOL, it was so bad) that she gave me a scorebook with music written by the Persian violin master Abolhassan Saba.
    Me: ???
    Dad: OMG, childhood memories.
Me: *hesitates* Okay, let me try. *plays* This is haaard. WTF, is this even a melody? Geez, I didn’t expect the culture gap to be so big. Let’s Youtube this. *search*
    Family: *listens to song*
    Parents: *sigh* so beautiful.
    Me: ...
I like this song, though: Ey Iran, sung by Darya Dadvar, an Iranian-French soprano. Sooo pretty.
And this one (especially when the singer starts at 1:45), one of those traditional songs, very stately and very Persian, this actually made my dad tear up, lol. The rest of the evening was spent going through YouTube searching for singers my parents still remembered.

Basically I'm sharing the pain with you: James Joyce's dirty love letters.
Found this thanks to Kate Beaton's James Joyce comic, and damn. Just. I'd quote some stuff out of those letters but I'd probably get banned or something, they're that dirty.

    Back

So... I haven't been on LJ/internet for quite some time now. It started with a sort of burn-out, thanks to uni and the exams I had. But then I just, well, didn't feel like doing anything, really (I wouldn't exactly call it a depression, more like being blue, or something like that). Reasons were:

    1. Sickness. My poor sinuses :(
    2. The news has been rather depressing lately. The whole economic crisis and everything. I can tell people are looking for a scapegoat to pick on, and my bet is on foreigners and immigrants :|
    3. My uncle died. )
    4. Uni managed to be even more stressful.
    5. Geert Wilders. whining behind cut )

On the other hand, I'm feeling a lot better now, and not just because of less uni stress.
    1. Yeah, baby, Eurovision Song Contest is back! The drama has already started, what with Georgia making a song with the title "We Don't Wanna Put In". Epic lulz. When I was a wee tod I watched Eurovision for the songs. Now that the songs suck I watch it for the lulz and drama, and this is a great start (Countries bitching through songs! Win!). I tried to imagine Putin's reaction and can't help but think of Tywin Lannister.
    2. Books. I have Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny in front of me (only one page in, though). I believe the gist of the book is Hindu Gods IN SPACE. Which is rad, but I don't really know much about Hinduism and wikipedia isn't helping much. Like, the fine details, they're not really coming through. Maybe I should go back to square one and read stuff in Dutch.
Anyway, I've almost only seen positive reviews of this book (including a G.R.R. Martin one) so I'm hoping it's good.
    3. Animanga is love.
    4. Also, the new Tudors season trailer. It's like the makers thought, to hell with historical credibility, let's make a rocking trailer with Queen music! Hee! (Also, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, whyyyy are you so old, you are so incredibly Theon. I Want It All is such a Theon song. Even my backup plan of you being Littlefinger pales in comparison.)
    5. ETA: Also an oscar wilde/bosie beatonna comic. LOL

So, I should get to checking out two weeks of friendspage. Oh boy.
ETA: Aaaaah, so fucking much, I'm never going to get this done. But at least I'm Egg? That's awesome guys, that's brilliant! :D (And it's hilarious how I got nominated for basically every Reach guy ever. LOL)
Son of ETA: I missed all these Greek Myth posts. This hurts me in my soul. I would've been the first to shout Achilles=Loras. I've done it before!

    Booooks...

Okay, so you will not have heard of this news tidbit, what with them only being important in the Benelux, but I have to talk about it.
There's a lot of talk about a batshit crazy neurologist here (okay, that's in Dutch, but so you know I'm not making this up). I know that not every med student becomes a great or even normal doctor, but this is just plain creepy. Basically, this man was a medicin addict and he told hundreds of his patients that they were incurably ill. He told people they had things like Alzheimer, and he proscribed them the wrong medicins on purpose. He's being accused of causing the deaths of two patients. One of the victims described how the neurologist treated him, it was awful. He basically gave him a lumbar puncture but he kept missing on purpose and he continued to puncture him, fifteen times in total (Also, this guy wasn't even qualified to do lumbar punctures. WTF). Stories about him keep popping up and Christ, O_o. Is he a sadist or something? I just cannot understand this man and it makes me uncomfortable to know that people like him get close to patients. Eurgh.

On a more cheerful note, we had the annual book festival here )

And I have a new lj layout, inspired by Romeo and Juliet :D The artist who did the art I used in the header is Valentin Melik His art is brilliant, especially the murals. The total Romeo and Juliet mural is so long and the colours are so well chosen. I love how he based it on the 1968 movie :D. And his other artworks, like portraits, are pretty amazing too.

    Also, 8 icons...

    Surprise, surprise. Ah well.

ALSO. I don't know, perhaps you already know of this webcomic and I'm the last one to know, but you should all check out Kate Beaton's comics lj, [livejournal.com profile] beatonna, it's seriously hilarious. She has a brilliant style (seriously, now I want to draw like her) and she makes a lot of historical comics, but also many other kinds of comics (See her Top Gun volleyball comic). She also has very interesting posts about quirky historical things (Like the Coronation of George IV and how Canada was portrayed in old newspaper comics) and just funny comics about her life.

Just a small selection of comics I think are utterly hilarious:
In Which Robin Hood Breaketh the Fourth Wall
    Foundin Fathas
Mermaids, they be a sexy omen
    Yeats in Love
This is for the Shakespeare fans
    The discovery of Canada
    Miyamoto Musashi is badass
Johan, this Mr. Darcy comic, you have to see it
Okay, I'll stop now, before I list all of them.

My mood theme is actually relevant to the post! :D

Christmas holidays are obvious over and this means that the orchestra compositions for the next season are revealed. And it's so awesome: Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev.
    Some reasons why:
    1) RUSSIAN COMPOSER, DURHUR.
    2) Romeo and Juliet! I looove this play and I love how Prokofiev puts all the drama in his music. I know, I know, it's overrated but I don't love it because it's a lovestory (though I love the Knights of Summer theme this play has) but because of the drama. Mercutio, Tybalt, the sense of loss, etc.
    3) I actually learned something: It's a violine solo (plural is violini soli?) because violin is masculine in Italian. But it's a viola sola (plural is viole sole?) because viola is feminine. I personally think this is awesome. And not just because we violas are finally getting a damn solo.

I mean, who DOESN'T know the Dance of the Knights (Montagues and Capulets)? (famous part starts at 1:35) It isn't the signature tune for the Soviet Era for nothing. And the other acts in the suites are really beautiful too, but you can only find the Dance of the Knights on YouTube :/

But! I'm also sad we're not doing number 7: The Death of Tybalt (awesome dramatic PWNAGE starts around 2:34) No seriously, this is music worthy of Tybalt. Nobody does cello and copper like the Russians.

Also, I really like the fact that the Netherlands is in a iceskating mania right now. Really, it's awesome to have a lot of actual natural ice (Last time was 1997! Dude!). But the cold isn't helping my cold. Still, ice skating :D

    The Doctor and meme

So... the new Doctor in Doctor Who has been announced and it's... Matt Smith. Never heard of him, but he's apparently the youngest Doctor-actor ever (26). Ah well, I hope he does okay, though it also depends on Steve Moffat, I suppose (but I think he's a better writer than Russel T Davies anyway). David Tennant has been a good Doctor even thought I definitely had my problems with the 10th Doctor and lost my interest in the end.
ETA: LOL at fandom_secrets for already making a 11th Doctor Wank!Bingo card. I should check out Fandom Wank tomorrow to see if anything happens.
ETA 2: The wankiness has already started! Hooooly shit.

I have only one New Year resolution this year: Make my teenage brother shave, dammit. He has this vague fuzz and it looks like he has dirt on his face. Here's an actual conversation today:
Brother's geek friend: *sees that brother has left for the toilet* When is he going to shave?
Me: Dude, you have no idea how much I tried.

I just discovered that Gambit is going to be in X-men Origins: Wolverine (Yes, yes, I'm very late in discovering this). I didn't want to see this movie before (sorry, Jackman fans) but now...

I can die happy, folks, one of my first fictional crushes (I was like seven, LOL) is finally going to be on the big screen.

Also, happy new year and all that. May we finally get A Dance with Dragons.

ETA: Also, King Arthur and the Knights of Justice is obviously the best adaptation of Arthurian Legend ever, Y/Y? I mean, it's a 90's cartoon. About football players, going back in time and becoming the knights of the round table. LOL

    more babble

So I already failed posting about something that makes me happy. Ah well.

Day Two in things that make me happy:
I like my uni and people in it. Just in general.
As for fannish stuff, I really like good (fan) art. I recently finished a Jeeves and Wooster book and I just had to check if Rule 34 is true. LOL, it is, Jeeves/Wooster fanart exists XD. Also, it's all cute and fluffy fanart, haha. In case you didn't know, these books are about a clueless British gent and his genius butler. Here's a very awesome fanartist who did this, this and this. She also did this pretty cool tired!House and coffeeproviding!Wilson fanart and this very swirly Samurai Champloo fanart. All art is worksafe.

Also, I have cracked. I'm going to watch Merlin even though I'm generally suspicious of Arthurian adaptations and even though the advertising gave me a BBC Robin Hood vibe (Robin Hood sucks). But, well, I can be pretty shallow and the actors are kind of hot. Also, people say it has some gay vibes? I'm down with that. Fanart that finally made me decide: this and (don't click this if you're at work and can't handle blood and homoeroticism) this. Ninjas of Camelot made me lol.

    A. People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blog and replace any question that they dislike with a new, original question. B. Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.

I got tagged twice, by etrangere and deeplyunhip, but I'm not tagging )

    1. Post about something that made you happy today even if it's just a small thing.
    2. Do this everyday for 8 days without fail.
    3. Tag 8 of your friends to do the same.

    Okay, because it's [livejournal.com profile] thedls_sword, I'll give it a try.

What makes me happy. Well, for all you Terry Prachett fans, you'll probably agree, that Moist-book art is pretty darn awesome and happy-inducing. (It's Moist! And Vetinari! Adora! *squee*)

Also! My orchestra had the annual Christmas concert! We thought we were going to suck but we did a smashing job! We did Cesar Franck's Symphony in D minor (links to youtube in this post) and the ever so traditional A Christmas Festival (no youtube link because they all suck).

I meant to post some rambling thoughts on racism here in the Netherlands, but I'm just a bit too happy, so perhaps tomorrow!

Also 2! The [livejournal.com profile] westerosorting superlative awards.
Yes, I feel like talking about all the nominations I got, but I'll spare you with this cut )
