1. Happy new year! Eide Nowrouz Mobarak! (Tis the first day of spring, the start of the new year for Persians and Iranians all over the world) It was a great first day of spring, with lovely weather and daffodils and hyacinths in bloom and sunshine. Except I also had my exam today, but I think I did okay, so I suppose it could be worse. My mother also made Saabsi Pollo. I really love Iranian food. But Eide Nowrouz also means that a million family members I don’t know call to talk to us. My Farsi sucks. The result: highly embarrassing conversations until my mother bails me out.

2. For all you offended Avatar fans, check this out! It’s a picture essay about the history of yellow facing (and black facing) and pretty eye opening (At least it is for me). I really didn’t know about how widespread yellow facing was and still is.

3. Another Avatar link (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets, lol) but of a different kind. Some girl made an Avatar webcomic and haha, it’s so offensive it’s hilarious. Some of the offences: Katara bloodbends Mai until she dies because she poisoned Katara’s son (Zuko is the dad). Azula has been forced into the role of a Purity Sue and she’s in love with Sokka ("How can anyone forgive me if I can't even forgive myself *gasp*") Aang still has his baby face, but the body of a bodybuilder on steroids (and he’s in love with Toph). And check out Katara's Disney Princess dress. Seriously, this comic is everything Avatar isn't (luckily) but it makes me laugh so damn hard.

4. My uncle (from Vancouver) visited us after his trip to Iran (to be at my other uncle’s funeral) and he came back with presents! My aunt (I haz a big family) gave me a diamond necklace because I got into uni. My uncle totally fixed my laptop. My other aunt, who visited us last autumn, was so impressed with violin play (LOL, it was so bad) that she gave me a scorebook with music written by the Persian violin master Abolhassan Saba.
Me: ???
Dad: OMG, childhood memories.
Me: *hesitates* Okay, let me try. *plays* This is haaard. WTF, is this even a melody? Geez, I didn’t expect the culture gap to be so big. Let’s Youtube this. *search*
Family: *listens to song*
Parents: *sigh* so beautiful.
Me: ...
I like this song, though: Ey Iran, sung by Darya Dadvar, an Iranian-French soprano. Sooo pretty.
And this one (especially when the singer starts at 1:45), one of those traditional songs, very stately and very Persian, this actually made my dad tear up, lol. The rest of the evening was spent going through YouTube searching for singers my parents still remembered.

Christmas holidays are obvious over and this means that the orchestra compositions for the next season are revealed. And it's so awesome: Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev.
Some reasons why:
1) RUSSIAN COMPOSER, DURHUR.
2) Romeo and Juliet! I looove this play and I love how Prokofiev puts all the drama in his music. I know, I know, it's overrated but I don't love it because it's a lovestory (though I love the Knights of Summer theme this play has) but because of the drama. Mercutio, Tybalt, the sense of loss, etc.
3) I actually learned something: It's a violine solo (plural is violini soli?) because violin is masculine in Italian. But it's a viola sola (plural is viole sole?) because viola is feminine. I personally think this is awesome. And not just because we violas are finally getting a damn solo.

I mean, who DOESN'T know the Dance of the Knights (Montagues and Capulets)? (famous part starts at 1:35) It isn't the signature tune for the Soviet Era for nothing. And the other acts in the suites are really beautiful too, but you can only find the Dance of the Knights on YouTube :/

But! I'm also sad we're not doing number 7: The Death of Tybalt (awesome dramatic PWNAGE starts around 2:34) No seriously, this is music worthy of Tybalt. Nobody does cello and copper like the Russians.

Also, I really like the fact that the Netherlands is in a iceskating mania right now. Really, it's awesome to have a lot of actual natural ice (Last time was 1997! Dude!). But the cold isn't helping my cold. Still, ice skating :D

I got an 8 for my first uni exam, people (though it's still subject to change). That's in the top 2% of 425 people. Oh God, now I can finally sleep peacefully XD

Had thorax two weeks ago. Got to dissect a sheep's thoracal organs. Had fun sticking my finger into the aorta and seeing it come out of the a. brachiocephalis. Had abdomen in cuttingroom last week, saw many intestines, which was fun (some smelly, some diseased. There was this one... nevermind, you don't want to know). Had hip area this week. Saw a lot of dead male and female genitalia. Felt a bit uneasy. Was not the only one. Death is something you get to think about a lot here. Had a college about what can go wrong in childbirth, with accompanying pictures. Felt my ovaries shrinking, so to say.

Orchestra practice was cool, Cesar Franck's Symphony in D minor. Links for those interested:
Movement one, part one, and two.
Movement two, part one and two.
Movement three.

It's very pretty, very much impressionistic. One is passionate, and dark. Two is subtle. Three is exuberant. I wish I wasn't this sleep deprived. Might've been more convincing >.>

Writing like Rorschach. Sorry.

Memes tomorrow. Now it's time for beautiful glorious sleep. *happy sigh*

Okay, so you know when your relatives visit and then suddenly your parents suggest that you play something on your instrument, even though they know you hate doing that for visitors? Basically what happened to me. D:

You people might or might not have heard about the Eurovision Song festival. It's an absolutely camptastic songcontest where each European country (except Italy, the smart bastards) send a music act to represent their country. I've been watching it since I was seven years old (My first was the last time Britain actually won/got high scores, LOL. ETA: OMG I just discovered it was Katrina and the Waves! Awesome!) and it's rather noticable to EVERYONE that the music sucks more than ever (so so badly, yet I keep on watching. It's like a trainwreck. Some examples: The horror that was Azerbaijan last year (It's an angel and a devil singing in a highpitched voice). W00t, I mean, just look at that. Spain was pretty lulzy, but so bad And if you want just plain bad without lulz here's Germany.)

Which is why I liked the fact that Anouk, a Dutch singer of great reknown, decided she might give it a try. This is Anouk with my favourite song, Nobody's Wife:

Not bad, eh?
Western European countries have been complaining that OMG the Eastcommies have been cheating by voting on each other, and that's why countries like Great Britain, The Netherlands and Germany always lose. Yeah right, IF THIS IS WHAT'S GOING TO COME WE FUCKING DESERVE IT *headdesk*: Meet the horror that is Toppers in Concert, our contestant.

It's going to be delicious to see them get zero point (though they'll probably scrounge some points together for their ginormous shows). I wonder what horrors other countries will cook up for us.
